F1: The Movie

My View:  F1: The Movie  (2025)  PG-13   In F1: The Movie, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) is a retired driver who thought he had burned too many bridges to ever return to F1 racing. An owner (Javier Bardem) wants to make a splash in the racing world and brings in Sonny to team with a new hot shot driver, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). F1: The Movie is a big Hollywood film with a huge, bankable Hollywood star that is about one of the world’s most popular sports and was done not only with the full cooperation of the sports governing body but with the world’s most famous driver (and many time world champion) Lewis Hamilton, as a producer. See this film in the theater, with as big a screen as you can, because the racing scenes are some of the most thrilling auto-racing sequences that have ever been filmed. F1 excels at putting you in the cars with the drivers while they race on tracks around the world. With the full cooperation of F1, the filmmakers were able to shoot some of the film on the actual race circuits, which makes this film feel even more real and thrilling. Pitt is everything you want in a big, charismatic star who makes you believe he isn’t over 60 and that he is one of the great race car drivers in the world. It’s a role that few stars out there could do, and Pitt does it with a flare that makes you believe he could go into F1 and be successful in only a few races. So, those are the pluses of this film: thrilling racing scenes and a star who knows how to be a star. Unfortunately, the power of the film's racing scenes is lost when the storyline gets in the way of making it work. F1: The Movie is a film that runs over two and a half hours, and too much of the film is spent setting up storylines that either don’t work or we don’t care about. I loved the relationship and chemistry between Sonny Hayes, the off-putting over-confident race car driver, and Kate McKenna, the team’s chief engineer (played by the always wonderful Kerry Condon). Sonny asks Kate to create a car that handles differently than most F1 cars, and reluctantly, she buys into what he’s selling. There is some great chemistry between Condon and Pitt, but I kept hoping that the romantic aspect would be put on the back burner and let this working dynamic unfold without the need for them to get together. There are plenty of problems with the plot, including how Sonny plays bumper cars without a serious crash or penalty, a poorly done feud between hot shot driver Joshua and Sonny, and a play for control of the racing team that you see coming from almost the start of the film, that doesn’t resolve itself until the very end. Still, you will have a great time watching a superstar actor in a role that he was made for and racing sequences that are incredibly well done and thrilling. My View:  M3GAN 2.0  (2025)  PG-13   M3GAN 2.0 takes place two years after roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) created M3GAN, a robot meant to be a companion to Cady (Violet McGraw), a robot that turned into a killing machine. A new military-grade robot, AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno), has been built using M3GAN’s technology and has become self-aware, turning against its creators. It is now attempting an AI takeover and sees Gemma and Cady as targets. Not if the new and improved M3GAN 2.0(Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis)  has anything to say about it. Back in 2023, I gave M3GAN, the first film in the series, a terrific review, stating, “Full of humor and some cool special effects, we have a horror star who makes Chucky look like an amateur.” Unfortunately, this time around, instead of returning to the horror/humor style that worked so well, they decided to make M3GAN the next action hero, and it doesn’t work. Instead of horror, we get a robot that is out to take over the world, and our team of robot scientists, including Cady (who in two years has somehow become a world-class Aikido fighter), go into a secret lair bunker, straight out of James Bond movie, to build a new M3GAN. You can almost hear the words being said: “We can make her better than she was. Better, stronger, faster.” While the first film had a lot to say about the state of parenting, this film is all about the evils of AI taking over our lives. The plot is razor thin, and the humor is forced, though there is a magnificent scene where M3GAN serenades her creator Gemma with a rendition of the Kate Bush song ‘This Woman’s Work.’ And yes, M3GAN dances, but it doesn’t have the quirky feel of the original film. And that’s the key issue: this two-hour film is simply not fun. Instead, it’s as if director Gerard Johnstone watched too many of those Cannon films of the 80s as a kid and decided it was time to bring them back. My View:  My Mom Jayne (2025)   TV-MA   My Mom Jane is a documentary by Mariska Hargitay, who was only three years old when her mother, Jayne Mansfield, died in a horrible car accident. Mansfield, at the time, was one of the most famous people in the world due to her films and the constant publicity she generated about her life and appearance. This is a film about the personal journey of a woman who didn’t know or remember her mother but whose shadow always followed her. My Mom Jayne is a captivating exploration of discovery, as Hargitay delves into her mother’s life—including her early marriage and pregnancy, her pursuit of a career driven by sheer determination, and her experiences with multiple marriages while raising four children.  We see as Mariska discovers things about her mother that were buried in the past and how, when they come to light, Hargitay gains a better understanding of her mother, including all the trials and tribulations that her brief but prolific life entailed. Mariska keeps peeling back the layers and discovering more about a mother she thought she knew, but she finds there is so much more. Hargitay does a marvelous job of showing us never-before-seen photos and home movies, along with a ton of Mansfield’s TV talk show appearances, that make you feel you are right there along with Hargitay. My Mom Jayne, is an emotional film that keeps surprising you as mysteries are solved, some of which are jaw-dropping revelations. By the end of the movie, you gain a deeper understanding of how misunderstood Mansfield was and how loving a mother she could have been to Mariska if her life hadn’t been cut short. Indiefest:  Tatami  (2023)  Leila (Arienne Mandi), a judo champion in her native Iran, and her coach, Maryam (Zar Amir Ebrahimi), have traveled to the Judo World Championship, intent on bringing home her country’s first gold medal. Midway through the competition, Leila receives an order from the Islamic Republic to fake an injury and withdraw. Will Leila do as she is told or continue competing, putting herself and her family in danger? Part sports movie and part thriller, with political intrigue thrown in, Tatami is a compelling watch that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Arienne Mandi gives a powerful performance as a woman who is willing to risk everything to achieve her dreams. Shot in black and white, the film follows Leila and her coach as she competes, and she feels that this is her day, that this is her tournament, and nothing can stop her. However, politics and a regime that prioritizes making a statement over sportsmanship threaten to derail her aspirations.Tatami is an emotionally charged and tense film where strength and courage are not just demonstrated on the mat, but also behind the scenes. It's an emotional rollercoaster, enthralling and complex, that will take you on a journey of unexpected emotions and places. Indiefest: Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore (2025)  The documentary Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore focuses on actress and activist Marlee Matlin, who won an Academy Award at the age of 21 for her performance in the film Children of a Lesser God (1986). Marlee has not only been a trailblazer for deaf actors but also a dedicated advocate for increased inclusion and accessibility within the Deaf community. I have been a fan of Marlee Matlin since seeing her heartbreaking and powerful performance in the 1986 film Children of a Lesser God, from which she won an Academy Award. That film propelled her overnight into three things she was not prepared for: becoming a spokesperson for every deaf person on the planet, an acting career based on one role in an industry that had never even considered that deaf people could be star material, and being in a relationship with a man who physically took out his insecurities on someone who loved him. Not Alone Anymore is a profile of a woman who never let people/critics define her by her hearing impairment. It’s a fascinating look at a woman who broke ground with every role she took on. Everyone who has used captioning when watching TV shows or movies should bow down to Matlin, as she was an almost a one-woman crusader for closed captioning. The film allows Matlin to tell her own story, and what a story it is. We discover the origins of her relationship with William Hurt and how it turned into a terrible, physically abusive one. Matlin tackles her drug addiction head-on with us and goes into detail about how she was treated by the press and by the deaf community. What I loved about this film was how it used closed captioning, allowing the hearing-impaired to express themselves without having to wait for an interpreter to catch up to what they were saying. It also shows how hard Matlin had to fight to have a career and how many times she had to hold her ground or fight for a role when studios would rather hire a hearing actor instead of someone with a hearing impairment. I loved the moment in the film when Marlee is with her brothers and sister, and Marlee, even with a family that is used to dealing with a deaf person, is left out of conversations because they aren’t talking to her or where she can see them. At one point, she signs to the camera, “I’m bored.” Watching this film about this amazing activist and actor, you will never make that statement. The film ends with two scenes. One is Matlin enjoying time with her newborn grand-baby, talking to the baby using ASL. And as credits roll, we watch Marlee in a car, signing along with a Billy Joel song as she waits at a red light. I can’t wait to see what Matlin does in her next role because I know it will be like her: powerful, tough, and thoughtful.   My Rating: Full Price  Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore Website  Now playing in select theaters.  

Forgotten Film:  Before Night Falls (2000) R   Before Night Falls is the story of Reinaldo Arenas (Javier Bardem), the Cuban novelist and poet who believed that Fidel Castro’s revolution would liberate his life. Instead, he was targeted for his homosexuality and imprisoned for years, where he continued to write. We follow Arenas through his life as he continues to write, as his life becomes harder and harder. Javier Bardem delivers a riveting and touching performance as a man who is repeatedly put down but refuses to be anything but himself. It's a master class in acting, and because of it, Javier Bardem received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. Of note is that Johnny Depp has a dual role in the film, one as a military officer who takes advantage of Reinaldo’s incarceration and as “Bon Bon’, a fellow inmate who is a crossdresser who helps Reinaldo smuggle out his writings.    My Rating: Full Price  Before Night Falls Info  Available to rent/buy on Amazon

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.

My View: Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul (2022) R  Trinitie (Regina Hall) and her husband, pastor Lee-Curtis (Sterling K. Brown), used to be the king and queen of a prominent Southern Baptist Mega Church. However, that was before a major scandal, and now they must rally and put the pieces back before it all goes away. I loved the performances of the two leads, especially Regina Hall, who dominates every scene she is in. Hall can do more with a look to the camera than most actors can do with a whole speech. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t know what it is. Is it a mockumentary? Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Most of the film is shot as if it is for a documentary, but there are times when the film isn’t part of the documentary, as in a bedroom scene where the couple attempts to have sex, which makes for a very confusing mess of a film. I will say that there is a hilarious scene during a car ride where the two get into a rather profane rap song, but that’s the film's highlight as far as humor goes. The problem is that the film is a one-trick pony on how a Christian couple is more concerned about their wealth than their souls, and it pounds us over the head with that notion throughout the film.   My Rating: Bargain Matinee   Honk for Jesus. My View: Love in the Villa (2022)   Julie (Kat Graham) is a woman who always has a plan. After a long-term boyfriend breaks up with her, she takes the ‘romantic trip’ to Verona, Italy, that the two had planned together. Once there, she discovers that the villa she reserved has been double-booked, and she’ll have to share her vacation with a cynical British man (Tom Hopper). Come on, what more do you want in a rom-com than a trip to Italy with two mismatched, great-looking soon to be in love people. Predictable, but with the beautiful scenery, who cares? The first third of the film is a bit rough (a little too much of a grab for humor), but Graham and Hopper give the movie a bit of a spark, and you get an ending that you want. Indiefest: Gigi & Nate (2022) PG-13   Six weeks away from his first year at college, Nate (Charlie Rowe) suffered a horrible accident, leaving him a quadriplegic. His world seems small and cold in that wheelchair until a unique service animal entered Nate’s life. A tiny capuchin monkey named Gigi. This is a film that is in two parts. The first part is an enjoyable film about a young man who finds hope and solace in a service animal. The film is enjoyable as Gigi and Nate slowly bond, and both Nate and his family begin to heal. The second half of the film takes a hard turn to try to give us a message that seems very heavy-handed, making a statement that it doesn’t know how to deliver without hitting us over the head with it. The film takes a big swing and misses. It's too bad because the first half is winning look at overcoming a horrible thing with the help of love and family.   My Rating: Bargain Matinee   Gigi & Nate Website  Now playing in select theatres. 

My View: Wire Room (2022)   New recruit Justin Rosa (Kevin Dillon) is working in ‘the Wire Room,’ where federal agents monitor in a remote facility the most dangerous criminals in the world. Rosa is watching a cartel member, Eddie (Oliver Trevena), who he has been told to keep alive at all costs. Things go wrong when Justin sees that a team of assassins has descended on Eddie’s house, and Justin warns the man of the danger. It’s a move that could cost both of their lives. It is tragic this is the last film that Bruce Willis will be in, and it is evident that he was having trouble with lines, with all the one-shots he is involved with, speaking one sentence at a time. Most of the film is horribly put together, with a plot line that stretches any sort of reason. It’s sad that your two leads only have action sequences near the film's conclusion, and then it’s mostly a shoot-out that ends with a whimper. Indiefest: The Good Boss (2021)   With his company up for an award that could save it, Blanco (Javier Bardem) is willing to do just about anything to ensure it happens. First, I went into this film thinking it would be a comedy, but it’s more a drama with humorous undertones. Blanco is a man who is used to things going his way. He is all bluff and bravado, thinking he can talk his way out of anything. However,from the start, we see cracks in Blanco’s life and work. A worker he has let go of is causing a scene right at the film's beginning, and things get worse as Blanco tries to control an out-of-control situation. Blanco's world is slowly crumbling around him, from his right-hand man having a breakdown to a fling that turns horribly wrong. Javier Bardem is brilliant in a role that is very different from most that he has done in the past. This is a performance for the ages, as the more that Blanco tries to put out the fire, the more the flames rise up to bite him. It’s a character that, at first, we like, but as we get to know him, the more we detest his ability to charm. But is Blanco as slick as he thinks he is, or will everything come tumbling down? Forgotten Film: Silvia Prieto (1999) R  Silvia (Rosario Blefari) is a woman in her late twenties who is perfectly happy going from job to job, moving around when she feels like it. It all changes when she finds out a second person is also called Silvia Prieto, and her life changes. Unfortunately, these changes are not what she hoped for. This delightful film from Argentina works because of the performance of Rosario Blefari, who is marvelous in the role of the strange and flighty Silvia. The film is full of wit and an excellent supporting cast. Truly a gem of a film and well worth watching.   My Rating: Full Price   Silvia Prieto Info

Extraction

My View: Extraction (2020) R   Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a black market mercenary known for his success rate. He is sent on an impossible mission to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. I had fun watching this action film and man, does it have action. The film is one bloody ride with Hemsworth’s character putting up a kill every few seconds, sometimes in very creative and gross ways. Things blow up a lot, and there are plenty of close hand to hand fighting scenes, with Hemsworth kicking butt while taking in quite a beating himself. The fighting sequences are so well done. I wish I had seen the film on the big screen, where I think the action would have stood out better than it does on the smaller scale. The film is aided by its location work being shot in India and is also helped by Indian action star Randeep Hooda and actress Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson, About Elly), who plays Rake’s handler. Stranger Things fans of David Harbour are going to be disappointed in his role, as other than getting drunk with Tyler’s character, he doesn’t have much to do. While the plot has a few holes and the dialogue is a little rough, it’s still a fun popcorn film that will satisfy any action fan.    My Rating: Bargain Matinee    Extraction Website   Currently available on Netflix.

Indiefest: The Roads Not Taken (2020) R   Leo (Javier Bardem) is living in New York City and is suffering from dementia. His daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), is struggling on this day to help her dad keep his health appointments, while in Leo’s mind, he is reliving two versions of his past, one in Mexico and one in Greece. The film feels much longer than its 85-minute run time. Bardem is wasted in the present-day scenes that take place in NYC. The film does find some emotional stability in the flashback sequences, especially the scenes that Bardem shares on-screen with Salma Hayek, as a couple that is grieving over the loss of their son. The problem is the film never finds any tug at the heart-strings pull in those father/daughter scenes in the present, and the sections where Leo is in Greece seem lost and almost worthless. The Roads Not Taken is one of those films that after you see it, you wonder if it was worth the time watching.   My Rating: Cable     The Roads Not Taken Website    Available for rent on participating on-demand services.

Familyfare: The Willoughbys  (2020)  PG   The Willoughby children are often neglected by their selfish parents, so the kids decide to send their parents on a vacation. Nanny (Maya Rudolph) shows up to take care of the kids, but the siblings decide to embark on their own high-flying adventure to find the true meaning of family. Kids are going to love this loud, vibrantly colored animated film about a bunch of kids who desperately want to get rid of their parents and find a way to stay together as a family. The characters are fun to watch, especially the strange twins, both of who are named Barnaby, and Ricky Gervais, as ‘The Cat’ who narrates the story is hilarious. I got a little bored with the film towards the end, but I think this fun and funny film will be one that children will enjoy.   My Rating: Bargain Matinee    The Willoughbys Website   Currently available on Netflix.

Forgotten Film: Frida (2002)  Artist Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) overcame the pain of a crippling injury and a marriage to an egomaniacal husband (Alfred Molina) to become one of Mexico’s iconic painters. Salma Hayek gives a moving and brilliant performance, I would have loved that the screenplay was better. The chemistry that is needed between Hayek and Molina never develops and, at times, treats their relationship a little too superficially. The film just can’t find its footing with a clunky storyline, but Hayek is a wonder to watch on the screen.   My Rating: Bargain Matinee    Frida Info

Abe decides to take Kris under his wing and their relationship changes both their lives forever. My View:  IT   (2017)  R   A group of bullied kids ban together when a monster named, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard), has taken the appearance of a clown and begins hunting children. This is a coming of age film, so it’s as if Stand by Me or E.T. had been made into a horror film.  Bill Skarsgard makes a scary and riveting Pennywise, the menacing clown who preys on children. The two lead kids, Sophia Lillis, who plays Beverly, a young woman with a bad rep, and Jaeden Lieberher, who plays Bill, a young man who is constantly picked on because of his stutter problem, are outstanding in a cast of superlative young actors. My problem with this film is that all the scary parts of this movie are the ‘jump out of the dark’ variety of frights. While I did jump a few times, I never felt the level of fear that I need from this type of film. The film also gets a little repetitious, as we are shown each kid’s thing that makes them the most frightened. Each time a kid is lured into a situation where they are confronted by their worst nightmare, like a scary painting coming to life, and, then when they are totally frightened, Pennywise shows up to attack. It just gets a little old after a while. What I did love about IT is its remarkable amount of humor. The kids have some awesome lines that help break the tension which makes this film so much fun to watch.   My Rating:  Full Price   IT Website

My View:  Home Again  (2017)  PG-13   Alice (Reese Witherspoon) is a single mom living in Los Angeles.  Her life changes when she lets three young men move in with her. This film was written and directed by a woman, and it shows because Alice is the focal point of this movie, and she doesn’t need to be rescued by a man or have her life fulfilled by one. Alice is a strong woman who, while still figuring out how to make it on her own with two kids, is getting along just fine. Her and her kids’ lives are enriched when the three guys move into her guest house, bringing a new perspective to the home. This is a perfect Reese Witherspoon vehicle that allows her to drive the film as only she can do with spunk and humor. I loved how the film ends, leaving it up to us to figure out where Alice’s life goes next. Home Again is a perfect ‘girls night out’ film but one that also can be a great ‘date night’ outing.  My Rating:  Bargain Matinee   Home Again Website

Indiefest:  Columbus  (2017)  Jin (John Cho) is a Korean-born man who finds himself stuck in Columbus, Indiana because his father is in a coma. He meets Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young woman who is staying in Columbus because she has to support her mother who is a recovering addict. Writer/director Kogonada brings us a magical film about family, relationships and dreaming of things that you think can't come true. The film takes place in Columbus, Indiana, the “Midwest Mecca of Architecture,” and its magnificent buildings are the backdrop for this film. Every shot utilizes these brilliant buildings, making you really feel a part of the landscape. What I love about this film is that the two characters slowly peel back the layers of Jin and Casey as their conversations continue. The characters become part of the architecture, interacting with it and exploring it. Casey has even numbered her favorite buildings like a film lover would rate movies. Columbus is a movie that will hold you spellbound as it explores the importance of relationships, the ones that we honor and the ones that we have to leave to better ourselves.    My Rating:  I Would Pay to See it Again   Columbus Facebook Page

Forgotten Film:  Tom Horn  (1980)  R  A legendary cowboy, Tom Horn (Steve McQueen), is hired by a group of ranchers to hunt down a group of rustlers. His methods are too brutal for the turn of the century community. Horn is a man of strong convictions but is stuck in the past, and that just might be his undoing. McQueen, in one of his last roles, is powerful and intense as the grizzled old cowboy. In Case You Missed It (A Film Just Released on DVD/Blu-Ray):  Megan Leavey  (2017)  PG-13  Megan Leavey (Kate Mara) is a troubled soul who has lost her best friend. She decides to join the Marines and become a bomb-sniffing dog handler. The bond she develops with her dog allows her to save many Marines’ lives on more than 100 missions. I loved this film about a woman who has no purpose in life until she meets a dog named, Rex, who teaches her how to love. This is Kate Mara’s finest performance, and it’s a brilliant one. Touching and heartwarming, she gives us a woman who fights for her best friend, her dog.  The story is a true one, and that makes the film even more poignant and moving. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

My View:  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales  (2017)  PG-13   Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back and so is his old nemesis, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) who has escaped from the Devils Triangle and is determined to kill every pirate at sea.  Captain Jack’s only hope is to find the legendary Trident of Poseidon, which will help him defeat Salazar. This film series must stop. I don’t care what happens to these characters, and the last two films have been a waste of time. To say that Johnny Depp doesn’t give any effort in his performance would be an understatement.  The storyline is confusing and not well thought out, and it seems that some of the plot points are just there to add more action sequences to the film. If you do see this film (and I hope you don’t) stay through all the credits as there is a bonus scene that unfortunately sets up the next Pirates movie.   My Rating: Cable   Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Website

My View:  Baywatch  (2017)  R  Lifeguard Mitch Buchanan (Dwayne Johnson) is known for running the beach his way. He is being challenged by a brash new lifeguard (Zac Efron) and a threat of a local criminal plot that harm the future of the Bay. I was a big fan of the original TV series, and I loved how campy and goofy it was. I just wish the filmmakers of this movie had captured more of that stupid magic that the series had. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t know what kind of film it is. Is it an R-rated comedy like 21 Jump Street, making fun of the TV series it’s based on, or is it an action film, or maybe, it’s a coming of age film? Because the movie never finds its footing, it feels uneven and choppy and every bit of its almost 2 hours length. I did like the chemistry between Johnson and Efron as both actors play off each other extremely well. I enjoyed the performance of Kelly Rohrbach, who plays the part of CJ Parker, a woman who doesn’t know how beautiful she is and thinks she is just one of the guys. On a side note, I hate that the opening credits did not use the original Baywatch theme song from the TV series. I think it would have been perfect for the opening scene of the film. Indiefest:  The Wedding Plan (2016)  PG  Michal’s (Noa Koler) fiancé leaves her on the eve of their wedding.  Michal refuses to cancel the wedding, convinced that God will supply her a husband, but the clock is ticking. I loved this film and Noa Koler’s performance. Koler is stellar in the role and makes you want to root for her character.  It’s a brilliant look at a woman who is tired of looking for a man to marry and decides that God will find a way to get her a groom. It’s a film that takes a number of twists and turns and keeps you guessing. This is an engaging, inspiring and beautiful film filled with interesting characters.  I definitely enjoyed going on this strange journey with Michal.  My Rating:  I Would Pay to See it Again   The Wedding Plan Website

Forgotten Film:  On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)  PG  James Bond (George Lazenby) goes undercover to find out the true reason for Blofeld’s allergy research being done in the Swiss Alps.  Along the way, Bond falls in love with a mob boss’s daughter (Diana Rigg). George Lazenby had the task of taking over the 007 franchise after Sean Connery decided to quit the series. This is probably one of the few Bond films that feels like the book. Lazenby is perfect as Bond, bringing a bit more of a tough guy to the part. There is an excellent chase sequence on skis that works better than some of the current film chases that use CGI computer special effects.  My Rating:  Full Price   On Her Majesty's Secret Service Info

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You:  Megan Leavey  (2017)  PG-13  Based on a true story of a young Marine (Kate Mara) who bonds with her military combat dog to save many lives during her deployment in Iraq.  I am a sucker for movies that involve dogs, and the trailer makes this film look like a winner.   Megan Leavey Website
